If your company is interested in becoming classified as a diverse First-tier* Supplier of The Hartford, go to the Supplier Diversity Portal to apply.

*A First-tier Supplier is a diverse supplier that performs work that directly benefits The Hartford and is paid by The Hartford.

What Makes a Diverse Supplier?

Minority Business Enterprise (MBE): A for-profit enterprise that is currently located in the United States or its trust territories, and is at least 51 percent owned by African Americans, Hispanic Americans, Native Americans, Asian-Indian Americans or Asian-Pacific Americans. Individual(s) must be involved in the day-to-day management of the business.

  • African Americans are U.S. citizens whose origins are in any black racial groups of Africa.
  • Hispanic Americans are U.S. citizens whose origins are in South America, Central America, Mexico, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, or the Iberian Peninsula, including Portugal.
  • Native Americans are American Indians, Eskimos, Aleuts, and Native Hawaiians.
  • Asian-Indian Americans are U.S. citizens whose origins are in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, or Nepal.
  • Asian-Pacific Americans are U.S. citizens whose origins are in Japan, China, the Philippines, Vietnam, Korea, Samoa, Guam, the U.S. Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands (Republic of Palau), the Northern Mariana Islands, Laos, Kampuchea (Cambodia), Taiwan, Burma, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Brunei, Republic of the Marshall Islands, or the Federated States of Micronesia.

Woman Business Enterprise (WBE): A for-profit enterprise that is currently located in the United States or its trust territories, and is at least 51 percent owned, controlled, and operated by a woman or women of U.S. citizenship. Individual(s) must be involved in the day-to-day management of the business.

Veteran-Owned Small Business (VOSB): Small Business, Veteran-owned as defined in 38 USC 101 (2), > 1 veterans, AND management & daily business Operations controlled by> 1 veterans.

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and/or Transgender Business Enterprise (LGBTBE): A for-profit enterprise that is currently located in the United States or its trust territories, and is at least 51 percent owned, operated, managed, and controlled by an LGBT person or persons who are either U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents, and exercise independence from any non-LGBT business enterprise.

Small business (SBE): Located in U.S., organized for profit, including affiliates is independently owned & operated, not dominant in field of operations in which it is bidding on Government contracts, AND meets Small Business Administration (SBA) size standards included in solicitation. The size standard is based upon the North American Industrial Classification System (NAICS) assigned to the specific procurement dependent upon product/services purchased.
