What do you insure?

The AARP Automobile Insurance Program from The Hartford insures the following: personal automobiles, pickup trucks, motorhomes, recreational vehicles, travel trailers, utility trailers, classic and antique vehicles, motorcycles, mopeds, scooters, all-terrain vehicles and jet skis. *Subject to eligibility requirements that vary from state to state. How are rates set?

All insurance companies use statistical history to set rates because they reliably predict future claims. Rates are based on the loss history of all AARP policyholders, the amount needed to pay expected claims and our business expenses. Back to Top

Do automobile rates differ by policyholder?

Yes. The AARP Automobile Insurance Program is not a group policy. The rate depends on individual characteristics, such as driving history, accidents, violations, type of vehicle, use of vehicle, age of driver, and number of miles driven annually. Back to Top

Is there a discount for taking AARP's 55 Alive Program?

Yes. In all but one state (NJ), a discount (usually 10%) is offered upon successful completion of the 55 Alive Course or any other nationally recognized defensive driver program. The discount is good for three years. Back to Top

Does an accident cause a premium to go up?
It's possible. If the accident is the insured driver's fault and results in bodily injury or property damage in excess of a certain threshold (usually $500), the premium would probably increase at renewal. The amount of the increase varies by state.

Does the AARP Insurance Program have local agents?

No. With the exception of claims offices, all service is provided either through the mail or by phone on toll-free numbers. Back to Top

How are claims filed and questions answered?

For both automobile and homeowners insurance program claims, there is a toll-free claims hotline available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The claims representative provides step-by-step guidance through a procedure that keeps paperwork to a minimum. Back to Top

Is a claims representative sent to handle a claim in person?

Claim representatives try to settle claims over the phone as often as possible. But if a personal visit is needed, a claims adjuster will be sent to inspect the car or home, assess the damage, and handle the claim. Back to Top

Can a policy be canceled due to an accident?

No--not with the AARP Auto Insurance Program. As long as simple requirements are met, a policy cannot be canceled or non renewed. Those requirements are:

  1. premiums are paid when due;

  2. the insured member retains a valid drivers license, remains physically and mentally capable of operating an automobile, has not been convicted of driving while intoxicated, and has not obtained the policy by misrepresenting information. (The Lifetime Continuation Agreement is not available in all states.)

Are there eligibility and underwriting guidelines that must be met?

Yes. To offer the programs to a broad spectrum of AARP members and keep the programs competitive, we must establish specific eligibility requirements. These ensure that the majority of members will qualify while minimizing the company's exposure to those with a worse-than-average loss history. Back to Top

Does AARP monitor The Hartford's service?
Yes. Each month AARP staff meets with The Hartford management and staff to review all aspects of service delivered to its members. This includes actual monitoring of phone calls and reviews of service performance statistics and results, to ensure that The Hartford continues to live up to its commitment of excellent service to AARP members.   AARP also works closely with The Hartford management to identify problems and develop appropriate solutions.
