Why Plan?
ABCs of Planning
Building a natural disaster plan may seem like a daunting task. No one likes to think about disasters, but being prepared in advance can help to reduce potential losses in the case of an emergency.
When creating a plan, remember that you don't need to do everything by yourself. In a time of crisis, the support of other people eases the burden and stress of a traumatic situation. Engage other family members, friends and neighbors to take part in the planning process and be a part of the plan as well.
To create a disaster plan, just follow these ABCs of planning:
Action: Take It!
-
Know which disasters you're at risk for and how best to prepare for them.
-
Plan for the possibility that you may have to evacuate your home.
-
Set up a support network to rely on for physical as well as emotional help. Your network should include immediate family as well as neighbors, friends and other family both in and outside of your area.
-
Evaluate the risks, abilities and needs of everyone in your household and adjust
your plan accordingly. -
Make a plan for your pets.
-
Create an emergency kit which includes water, food, first aid materials, flashlight, tools and extra bedding.
Belongings: Know Them!
-
Create a home inventory. Go from room to room and take video or photos of your belongings. Make a written inventory list as well.
-
Keep receipts for valuable items, and write the make, model, serial number, date of purchase, and other relevant information on your inventory list.
-
Store a copy of whatever documentation you create away from your home.
-
Update the inventory periodically.
Connections: Make Them!
-
Have family conversations about disasters and how you will support each other.
-
Broaden your support network to include neighbors.
-
Be specific with others in your network about the tasks that need to be done and who will do them.
-
Don't hesitate to ask for help if needed, and reach out to others to offer your help.
-
Adjust your support network after a major life event.
