Why Plan?

Talk About Planning Today

Given the option, most of us would probably choose to do something else other than think about disaster planning.  But by planning ahead, you can reduce the potential losses that could occur to you and your family during a natural disaster. Getting caught unprepared can lead to more anxiety, danger and stress than is necessary both during and in the aftermath of a disaster. The planning process doesn't have to be difficult. It does take time-but the payoff in terms of safety, reduced stress and a smoother recovery is immense.

Start by talking about disaster planning with your immediate family and then expand your support network to include individuals that you can turn to in times of emergency. These could include neighbors, friends and relatives-both nearby and outside the area.  Also, make sure to include emergency services fire, police, hospitals, shelters, etc. into your planning.

Knowing in advance which individuals and organizations you can turn to when a disaster strikes will help alleviate stress and confusion during an emergency.
