How to Protect Your Property

Auto

During certain disasters, your vehicle can be your means of escape if you need to evacuate. It's important to prepare your vehicle in advance so you can move your family out of the area at a moment's notice.  As soon as you're aware of a potential disaster and evacuation, make sure you have a full tank of gas. Prepare an emergency kit with first aid supplies, food, water and blankets and keep it in the car.

If you're facing a disaster situation where you won't be able to take your car with you, having a plan in place for your vehicle will help minimize damage and loss.

Before a disaster

  • Research where you might leave your car for safekeeping in case of a disaster. This way, you're not forced to leave it exposed to the elements. Depending on the type of disaster, you could use a parking area on higher ground, a secure garage or an underground parking structure.
  • Have a good auto insurance policy in place before a disaster strikes. Your policy can help you cover a full range of repairs as well as car rental if needed-and lessen the stress during the recovery period after a disaster. Make sure you keep a copy of your insurance card and vehicle registration in a safe place so you can easily access them later.

After a disaster

  • Take steps to minimize further damage to your vehicle. Move your car to a secure, sheltered place as soon as possible. If you can't move your car right away, cover any broken windows and remove water from the inside to help minimize the damage.
  • Keep all your receipts from repairs, car rentals and towing. You will need these when you file your claim.
