Rockin' Benefits Enrollment This Fall
By Mike Fish, September 2012
Eat less, exercise more. It’s the right thing to do to be healthy. Protecting yourself with insurance is also the responsible thing to do. But like diet and exercise, a lot of people acknowledge the wisdom of signing up for insurance benefits at work but many put off the choice.
In The Hartford’s 2012 Benefits for Tomorrow Study, 1,000 full-time workers were asked to choose a song that summed up how they felt during their last benefits enrollment. “Taking Care of Business” ranked No. 1 in the national survey.
The Bachman Turner Overdrive song was first with 48 percent of the vote. Rounding out the top five were:
- “I Will Survive” by Gloria Gaynor,
- “Dazed and Confused” by Led Zeppelin,
- “Que Sera Sera” by Doris Day, and
- “Pressure” by Billy Joel.
“Walking On Sunshine” by Katrina & the Waves and “We Will Rock You” by Queen landed at the bottom.
We insurance types would prefer that more people felt sunny at enrollment time. However, we understand from our research that many are dealing with new or unfamiliar topics. For example, only one in four Americans in our poll said that they completely understand life insurance.
We’re entering benefits enrollment season for many companies. Now is a good time to get up to speed on a benefit that a majority of our survey-takers rated as “absolutely critical” – life insurance. You’ll find information about the protection on our website.
To help you plan ahead, here are two quick tips about life insurance.
Life insurance, as the name suggests, is about life. Have you had any life changes, such as a baby, new home or marriage? Do you expect any of those life changes in the next year? Signing up for life insurance at work can help you do the right thing. It will never begin to replace you, but it can help secure the future of your loved ones.
Another tip would be to ask around. Chat with your spouse, parents, co-worker or manager.
We hope that with a little information and support you can rock this year’s benefits enrollment.
