Measure

A Regional Beverage Distributor fields a fleet of over 100 vehicles. The risk manager, aware of the rising cost of fuel and the reality that losses below their deductible impact the bottom line, was interested in a solution that could mitigate these costs.

Coach

FleetAhead by The Hartford recommended in-vehicle telematics that gave drivers immediate feedback on risky maneuvers. And gave their fleet manager, risk manager and supervisors a library of data from which to assess driver performance.

More importantly, managers and supervisors were coached to read that data correctly, identify areas for improvement, and make corrections in a positive, constructive way.

Improve

A year later, overall risky driving behavior was reduced by 75%.

The improved driver behavior led to an increased fuel savings of nearly 7% – or almost $300 per vehicle annually.

Accidents were reduced by 31%, with a 74% reduction in accident-related costs.

Driven by Data

Aggressive driving can lower gas mileage by 33% on the highway and 5% around town.

Each vehicle reaches optimal fuel economy at a different speed, but gas mileage usually drops sharply above 60 mph.

Lose weight. 100 pounds of unnecessary weight in a vehicle can lower fuel economy by up to 2%.

Speeding ticket: Each 5 miles driven over 60 mph is like paying an extra 24¢ per gallon at the pump.

Avoid excessive idling. It gets 0 miles to the gallon.

On the highway cruise control allows vehicles to maintain a constant speed and, in most cases, save gas.

Using overdrive gears reduces vehicle’s engine speed. Which reduces gas consumption and engine wear.
