The Hartford’s Anti-Fraud Team

Insurance fraud costs an estimated $100 billion annually in the United States. It affects every insurance buyer, inflating premiums and often inflicting pronounced effects on individual businesses. The Hartford employs skilled fraud professionals to protect our customers from fraud and its harmful financial effects.

The Claims Handlers

Most fraud investigations start with the claims handler. They watch for clues of possible fraud and have the authority to refer a claim to a Special Investigator. Every new Hartford claims handler is well-trained to spot fraud indicators.

  • Fraud training is a key component of our instructor-led claims handler training program.

  • Every Hartford claims handler must complete a self-paced fraud awareness course.

  • Our Special Investigators conduct fraud seminars for claims handlers, sharing their insights and real-world fraud experiences.

The Fraud Investigators

Our Special Investigation Unit (SIU) collects evidence in fraud cases. Investigators commonly visit an accident site and inspect physical evidence, interview witnesses, record statements, take photographs, and search for clues. They may also review police, public and industry records.

  • The Hartford’s nearly 50 investigators operate out of 10 claims centers nationwide.

  • Our Special Investigators average 16 years of state and local law enforcement experience.

  • SIU managers actively review fraud cases to ensure compliant and quality investigations.

  • The Hartford’s SIU cooperates with law enforcement officials to prevent insurance fraud.

The Intelligence Specialists

The Special Investigation Unit employs a highly trained team of  Intelligence Specialists who explore information to identify fraud and fraud trends. They leverage technology to sift and sort data from multiple Hartford and external sources.

  • Knowing fraud trends helps us arm our fraud team with actionable information.

  • Data mining helps us identify organized fraud rings, which can significantly impact local premium rates.
