Small Business Owners: Up on Economy, Down on Risk.


Key points:

  • Our 2013 study shows more small business owners feel optimistic that the national economy will strengthen this year.
  • However, a majority of small business owners say the number of risks they are taking has stayed the same in the last six months.
  • In addition, more describe their current level of risk-taking as conservative compared to last year.

More owners are optimistic in the national economy strengthening than they were last year... Optimistic that the national economy will strengthen this year: 33% in 2012, 48% in 2013.

Despite this optimism, a majority of small business owners say that the number of risks they are taking has stayed roughly the same over the last six months.

Over the past six months, the number of risks small business owners are taking has: Increased 16%, Stayed the same 69%, Decreased 14%.

In addition, more small business owners describe themselves as “conservative” in the overall level of risk they are currently taking with their business compared to last year.

Reasons behind owners' rating level of risk as conservative or risky. Owners who rate themselves as conservative say it's because: They're highly risk averse 15%, They are doing well and simply want to maintain the business 13%. Owners who rate themselves as risky say it's because: The type of business they own requires risk 22%, Risk is needed to make money 11%.

Interesting fact: Even with the rise in optimism about the national economy this year, more small business owners feel optimistic about the local economy in the next six months than the national economy (48% versus 22%, respectively).
