Loss Control

Emergency Preparedness

Emergency Preparedness

Complete loss control includes preparing for the truly devastating. Nowadays, terrorist attacks, bomb threats, workplace violence, and product tampering are all possibilities. And, of course, natural disasters are an ever-present threat. Being ready with a plan that's tailored to your organization's unique needs can mean the difference between disagreeable and disastrous.

The Hartford's loss control professionals can help you prepare before an emergency strikes with so many different services.

  • Develop an emergency policy statement.
  • Identify hazards, risks and assets.
  • Develop a plan, including how to respond and recover.
  • Conduct training and drills for all employees.
  • Routinely plan updates.

Five Practical Things You Can Do Today

1.

Identify an evacuation plan and route for every building you occupy. Train your employees in evacuation procedures.

2.

Keep an updated list of emergency telephone numbers. Include police, fire, ambulance, and local government. Also include cell and home numbers of key business decision makers at all locations.

3.

Stock up on essentials in case of emergency. Supply every business location with a first-aid kit, flashlights, batteries, camera, film, basic tools, and bottled water.

4.

Protect vital records (such as financial statements, blueprints, product specs) by storing them in a UL-rated safe.

5.

Annually review your business insurance coverage with your broker to ensure it meets your current needs.
