Coverage to Help Keep a Business in Business
When disaster strikes, a business may need to close temporarily. And that means loss of income.
Loss of income is one of the main reasons most businesses don't reopen after a serious loss. When the unexpected occurs, expenses don't go away. In fact, they may rise significantly. Without revenue, it can be difficult for a business to survive.
Business Income insurance helps replace lost business income and covers continuing expenses (including payroll) and extra expenses associated with helping to keep a business going.
Not All Business Income Coverage is the Same
The Hartford's Business Income coverage helps small business owners so they can prevail when the unexpected occurs. In fact, the coverage features we provide as "standard" are considered optional by many other carriers. Consider this …
Business Income coverage under the Spectrum® base policy automatically extends coverage …
- To interruption of computer operations* at the scheduled premises.
- Other companies may impose a separate interruption of computer operations limit or coverage may be subject to an annual aggregate limits
- For continuing expenses, including payroll, for the period of restoration, up to 12 months
- Other companies may limit payroll to 60 days
Off-Premises Utility Services optional coverage includes the following:
- $25,000 coverage limit (available through a Stretch® endorsement)
- Others companies may include limits as low as $2,500 or not offer this coverage**
- The Hartford has a 12-hour waiting period
- Other companies may require a 24-hour waiting period and in some cases, longer
- Coverage for overhead transmission lines
- Other companies may consider this an option which must be selected and charged for separately
- Coverage for off-premises utility supply services – power, water and communications
- Other companies may require that each supply service be selected and charged for separately
Tailored Solutions
You can easily tailor coverage by increasing Off-Premises Utility Services limits -- as high as $100,000. Other companies may not have this option available or may require special underwriting handling before pricing. .
* Purchasing The Hartford's Computers and Media endorsement extends covered perils to include, for example, computer virus or head crash.
** Some insurers may offer equivalent limits but may not provide the limits as part of a package endorsement. When available, limits may vary.
Are Your Customers Prepared for a Data Breach?
72% of data breaches investigated in 2011 were from organizations with fewer than 100 employees.¹
Data breach is one of the fastest growing threats to the viability of small businesses. Nearly all businesses that handle or store private business, customer, patient or employee data are at risk.
When sensitive data is exposed, your customer's reputation is on the line. And most businesses are required by law to take action or face the possibility of civil litigation or other penalties.
Your customers need tools and information to help minimize the likelihood of a data breach and the resources to confidently manage a breach crisis — if one occurs.
Peace of Mind from The Hartford
The Hartford's data breach coverage provides:
- Expense coverage to help absorb some of the costs associated with a breach of personally identifiable information
including notification, public relations, legal and liability expenses.
- Professional assistance to help ensure that your customer complies with applicable laws and regulations to avoid civil litigation and other penalties.
- Access to a breach preparedness website for easy-to-understand prevention and response guidelines.

Essential Protection for a Growing Risk
Since 2007, the EEOC reports a 21% increase in wrongful employment practice charges filed.1
Since 2007, over 470,000 claims for wrongful employment practice have been filed with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC).1 Nearly every company is vulnerable, and the financial impact of a lawsuit can be staggering. Even an unsubstantiated claim can cost tens of thousands of dollars in attorney's fees.
Consider These Actual Claim Scenarios
- An employee claims she was terminated due to religious discrimination. She is awarded $110,000 in back pay and compensatory damages.2
- A mother of two claims she was denied a promotion because of her caregiver responsibilities. She receives a settlement of $105,000 for alleged sex discrimination.3
Would your customers have coverage to protect them in either scenario?
