Natural disasters don’t happen every day but, when they hit, the repercussions can be severe. Having a disaster plan can help to:
- prevent loss of life and reduce property damage,
- lessen your stress around recovery and rebuilding, and
- decrease the time it takes to get your life back in order.
What is an essential ingredient of an effective disaster plan? Talking to — and preparing with — family, friends and neighbors ahead of time.
The Hartford and the MIT AgeLab created an informative booklet It Could Happen to Me: Family Conversations about Disaster Planning to help older adults better prepare for natural disasters. The booklet is based on research we conducted with people age 50 and older in different parts of the United States, and interviews with claim adjusters from The Hartford who work with people who have experienced catastrophic losses due to natural disaster.
