Chief Claims Officer
John Kinney joined the company in 2003. He led the company’s property and casualty field claims organization responsible for workers’ compensation, automobile, property, general liability and claims customer support. His previous roles include leading the Complex Claim Group, a multidisciplinary team of lawyers and other professionals, which managed third party latent bodily injury and property damage claims, including asbestos and other latent injury “long tail” claims.
Kinney leads The Hartford’s property and casualty and group benefits claims operations and its more than 5,500 workers compensation, automobile, property, general liability, group benefits and support claim professionals. Collaboratively, Kinney participates in the design, build, and implementation of operational and strategic initiatives that support The Hartford’s growth and profitability objectives. In addition, he oversees The Hartford’s property and casualty run-off operations.
Prior to joining The Hartford, Kinney held various legal positions at The Travelers Companies’ Special Liability Group, where he focused on the management of asbestos litigation. At both Travelers and The Hartford, he has worked closely with state and federal legislators regarding various tort reform initiatives.
Kinney holds a B.A. in political science from Fairfield University and a J.D. from Seton Hall University School of Law.
Kinney is a member of the Camp Courant Board of Directors and serves as a captain of the Pan Mass Challenge cycling team.
