Sport: Para-Cycling

Growing up in upstate New York, winter sports were a way of life for Will. But in 2008, he suffered a spinal cord injury (SCI) during a motocross race that resulted in complete paralysis below his chest. Lying in that field, truly afraid, he could not have envisioned what his life would look like today.

Part fight, part surrender mixed with love and support from his friends and family became the recipe for life after injury. A local para-athlete brought a loaner handcycle to Will’s house the day after he returned from the hospital. It quickly became a source of freedom and allowed Will to burn off some excess energy while staying healthy and fit.

In time, para-cycling became a serious sport to him, and in 2012, he won the U.S. Paralympic selection qualifying race, all three domestic U.S. cycling championships and became the first American male to ever win an individual UCI World Cup and World Championship medal in his injury class. Will recently competed at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games where he brought home a silver medal for Team USA.

Will works closely with The Hartford, a Founding Partner of U.S. Paralympics, a division of the U.S. Olympic Committee, helping to positively change public attitudes and perceptions about disability.
