Required Car Insurance Coverages in Pennsylvania

In accordance with Pennsylvania state law, drivers must carry liability coverage in the following amounts:2
 
  • $15,000 for bodily injury, per person per accident
  • $30,000 for bodily injury, total per accident
  • $5,000 for property damage per accident

Proof of Car Insurance for Pennsylvania Drivers

It’s always a good idea to keep your car insurance ID cards in the vehicle with your registration. Pennsylvania drivers also have the convenient option to furnish electronic ID cards as proof of their car insurance. Pennsylvania Uninsured Driver Facts

According to a 2012 Insurance Research Council report, 6.5 percent of Pennsylvania drivers don’t have car insurance. Pennsylvania is well below the national average of 12.6% of drivers who are without car insurance.3

Although uninsured and underinsured motorist coverages are optional in Pennsylvania, they can help protect you from financial loss in the event that you are involved in an accident with a motorist who doesn’t have adequate car insurance.

Beyond Car Insurance: Staying Safe on Pennsylvania Roads

As you travel through Pennsylvania, there are a number of safe driving laws meant to protect you on Pennsylvania’s highways and byways. Here are just a few:4
 

Pennsylvania Seat Belt Laws:

Although Pennsylvania does not have mandatory seat belt laws, law enforcement can ticket you for not wearing a seat belt if you are pulled over for another reason.
 

Pennsylvania Distracted Driving Laws:

Texting while driving is banned in the State of Pennsylvania.
 

Pennsylvania Teen Driver Laws:

Getting a driver’s license is a rite of passage for all teenagers, and Pennsylvania wants to be sure they stay safe in the process! Pennsylvania has implemented graduated licensing laws to ensure that teenagers gain the experience and maturity that’s required to be safe behind the wheel. Graduated licensing laws limit nighttime driving, restrict teen passengers and ensure an adequate amount of supervised driving practice.

If you are age 50 or older, once you're insured through this Program for at least 60 days, you cannot be refused renewal as long as applicable premiums are paid when due. Also, you and other customary drivers of your vehicles must retain valid licenses, remain physically and mentally capable of operating an automobile, have no convictions for driving while intoxicated and must not have obtained your policy through material misrepresentation. Benefit currently not available in HI, MI, NH, NC and TX.

First Accident Forgiveness and the Disappearing Deductible, are only available with the Advantage Plus package. A policy without these benefits is also available. (Call for details.) To qualify for the Accident Forgiveness benefit in most states, all drivers on the policy must have a clean driving record (no accidents or violations) for five consecutive years. First Accident Forgiveness is not available to CA policyholders. To qualify for the Disappearing Collision Deductible benefit in most states, all drivers on the policy must have a clean driving record for three consecutive years. NY drivers are not eligible for the complete disappearance of the deductible, although it will be reduced to a minimum of $100. The Advantage Plus package option, the Disappearing Deductible benefit and the Accident Forgiveness benefit are not available in all states.
 
‡‡ One Deductible applies for any Home policy (Home Advantage or not) if Auto policy is also insured with The Hartford and includes the Advantage Plus package coverage.
