Understanding Homeowner Policy Declarations Page

Welcome Auto & Home Customers

You can easily manage your policy, billing, and documents in one convenient place.
Understanding Your Homeowner Policy Declarations Page
Your homeowners policy declarations page is the first page (or more) of your policy. It summarizes key information that is unique to your policy, including the named insured, property location, your coverages and their limits, and your yearly premium.

You receive a declarations page when you purchase a new policy and each time you renew or make changes to your policy. As soon as you receive the declarations page, take a few moments to review your policy information to make sure it’s correct and reflects the coverage you currently need. If you wish to add or update any coverages, please contact your agent or visit the Customer Service Center.

The following definitions will help you understand each section of your declarations page and the particulars of your coverage with The AARP® Homeowners Insurance Program from The Hartford.1

Coverages and Limits of Liability

This section itemizes the coverages you have elected and their limits of liability – or in other words, it lists the maximum amounts The Hartford will pay in the event of a covered loss.

Section I: Property Coverage

  • Dwelling Coverage pays for damage caused by a covered loss to the physical structure of your home and any structures attached directly to it. This includes damage to fixtures, such as plumbing, heating, electrical wiring, and permanently installed air-conditioning systems. The limit of liability is the replacement cost, or the amount required to rebuild your home in the event of a total loss.
  • Other Structures Coverage covers structures on your property that aren’t attached to your home, such as a detached garage or a shed.

  • Personal Property Coverage covers the contents of your home, including furniture, clothing and appliances, even when they aren’t on your property, such as those at an off-site storage locker or with your child at college.
  • Loss of Use Coverage pays for your temporary living expenses if you can’t stay in your home due to a covered loss.

Section II: Liability Coverage

  • Personal Liability Coverage covers property damage and bodily injury to others for which you or a family member who lives in your home are held legally responsible. It also provides for your legal defense against a liability lawsuit.
  • Medical Payments Coverage covers any medical bills incurred by someone who is injured on your property.

Deductible Section1

This indicates the amount you will pay out-of-pocket for any claim submitted for coverage under Section 1 of your policy.

This indicates the address of the insured property.

Rating Information

Forms and Endorsements

These are provisions that add to or change the terms of your original insurance contract and allow you to customize your coverage to meet your individual needs. Below is a sample of some of the standard endorsements that may be included in your policy – just some of the unique features we offer AARP members:

  • Personal Property Replacement Cost Loss Settlement (or “New-for-Old” Protection): If your personal property is destroyed by a covered loss, we’ll help pay the cost to replace it with brand new items of the same quality. Certain types of personal property, such as antiques, collector items, and fine art are excluded from this endorsement.
ProtectorPLUS Zero Deductible Benefit: This waives up to $5,000 of your homeowners insurance deductible if you experience a qualifying loss.
  • Extended Replacement Cost Coverage: If you insure your home for 100 percent of its rebuilding cost, we’ll pay the full cost to rebuild your home up to 125 percent or 150 percent of the stated limits for your dwelling.

Credits or Discounts

Any credits and discounts on your policy premium for which you qualify are itemized here.
