With regard to this policy, “company business” includes, but is not limited to, in-person or virtual employee and/or client gatherings or functions held at private or public locations.
Except as described below, The Hartford prohibits the sale, distribution, solicitation, purchase, possession or consumption of alcoholic beverages or illegal drugs, as well as the misuse of otherwise legally prescribed drugs (all of which are “substances” for purposes of this policy), on company premises, or while driving on or otherwise engaged in company business.
Engaging in any of the activities indicated above, or reporting to work while impaired by any substance, will result in disciplinary action, up to and including termination.
Leadership will take appropriate action to prohibit any individual from engaging in business of The Hartford where that individual's behavior, judgment, or performance appears to be, impaired by any substance.
Applying the Policy
The consumption of alcoholic beverages is prohibited on company premises except where alcohol is served through a food service as part of an authorized company function. Employees who drink alcoholic beverages while on company business or during an authorized company function are expected to exercise due care and good judgment in accordance with all company policies.
- Prescription drugs may only be brought, possessed, or consumed on company premises in the manner, combination and quantity in which they are prescribed.
- If there is concern for the safety and/or well-being of an employee safe passage home should be arranged for the individual.
- Employees are expected to cooperate with requests for medical or other information or examinations, in furtherance of management's responsibility to enforce this policy.
Considerations for Hosting a Company Function
- The leader (AVP or higher) with ultimate authority over the group holding the authorized company function where alcohol is served is responsible for ensuring adherence to all company policies.
- All alcoholic beverages must be served through an authorized food service for a restricted period of time (generally no more than two hours) and food must be available.
- Alcoholic beverages are restricted to dining rooms, lounges, event space and cafeterias.
- Alcohol is not to be served to minors or anyone who appears to be impaired.
The Hartford is required by applicable law to disclose information concerning employees who are convicted of drug related criminal offenses involving conduct that occurred in the workplace. Accordingly, any employee of The Hartford who is convicted of a drug related criminal offense for conduct that occurred on company property or while otherwise engaged in company business must notify Employee Relations within five days of the conviction.
Scope
This policy applies to all employees of The Hartford and its participating subsidiaries who are based at U.S. locations of The Hartford. Non-U.S. units shall also apply the intent and provisions of this policy unless local applicable law requires otherwise.
