Reporting and Investigating Discrimination and Harassment Policy

Overview/Policy Statement

Incidents of discrimination and harassment are to be reported as indicated below. The Hartford does not permit and will not tolerate retaliation against or penalize employees for reporting an incident of discrimination, harassment or intimidation to the persons designated by this policy or for cooperating in a related investigation.
 
Retaliatory conduct or failure to follow these reporting and investigation procedures may result in disciplinary action, up to and including or removal from Hartford assignment or termination of employment.
 

Rationale

The Hartford is committed to providing a work environment where everyone is treated with dignity and respect as well as an environment that is free from discrimination and harassment. The Hartford also strives to comply with any and all applicable laws that address discrimination in the workplace.
 

Scope

This policy applies to all employees and contractors of The Hartford and its participating subsidiaries who are based at U.S. locations of The Hartford.  Non-U.S. units shall also apply the intent and provisions of this policy, unless local law requires otherwise.
 

Applying the Policy

  • Managers have responsibility for following these procedures regardless of whether the conduct or activity involves an employee within their management chain of control.
  • The Hartford is committed to ensuring any complaints of discrimination or harassment involving employees of The Hartford are fully escalated and investigated by Employee Relations and/or Investigative Services.
  • Internal Complaints. If you receive information about, witness or are subjected to any potential violations of the Equal Employment Opportunities or Harassment-Free Workplace Policies, then report the alleged conduct as follows:

External Complaints

If you receive any legal documents involving employment discrimination or harassment allegations, including a court complaint, charge from a federal, state, municipal or other recognized compliance agency (such as EEOC, DOL) or demand letter from an outside attorney, then immediately notify Employment and Employee Benefits Law – by taking all of the following actions:
