An internship is a program where The Hartford, school and student negotiate prior to the start of the internship period. Internships provide an opportunity for students to explore their interests at The Hartford. To minimize risks under wage and hour and Workers’ Compensation laws, it’s important to keep to the purpose of the internship and keep the role related to the school work for which the student/intern is receiving course credits. An arrangement that does not fall into this category is not a true internship and the employee must be hired and paid as an employee.
Process Considerations
- The University Relations Team follows all Recruitment, Selection and Development policies and guidelines.
- In addition to the above, University Relations coordinates all internships, both paid and unpaid.
- To help answer any FAQs, please familiarize yourself with the internship process using the Manager SharePoint site.
- To initiate the recruiting process for a summer intern, please complete the request form found on the Intern Manager SharePoint site and note the following:
- All internships must be paid, unless advance approval has been received from Employment Law.
- Externships, which offer experience in lieu of pay, must have advance approval received from Employment Law.
- All internship job postings must be advertised externally for a minimum of 5 days.
