Overview/Policy Statement
The Hartford is a proponent of community service and civic responsibility, as another way to apply our passions and serve a greater purpose. That is why we encourage employees to serve on jury duty when summoned.
Managers and employees are responsible for adherence to company policy. Failure to do so may result in disciplinary action up to and including termination.
Eligibility/Scope
This policy applies to any active U.S. employees of The Hartford, summoned for jury duty by U.S. state or federal courts.
Applying the Policy
-
The Hartford provides paid time off for jury duty, at the employee's normal rate of pay, regardless of the employee's length of service.
-
Employees are permitted to retain any monies provided to them by the court, in addition to their regular pay.
-
Employees are paid according to whatever their regularly scheduled hours would have been had they not been on jury duty.
-
Employees are required to inform supervisors as early as possible when they are called to jury duty, providing a copy of the summons.
-
Employees are required to inform supervisors once they have completed jury duty, providing a copy of court documentation as evidence of the number of days they have served.
-
In cases of extreme business pressures, management may ask employees to request a postponement from jury duty, which may or may not be granted by the court.
-
Generally, an employee on jury duty should return to work when dismissed from court before the middle of his or her shift.
-
In recognition of work and family concerns, employees on non-standard shifts are not generally required to report to work after having served on jury duty during the day. Like employees working other shifts, they will be paid for this time.
