References are often requested by current or former employees applying for internal or external job opportunities. To ensure employees receive recommendations, verifications and references when needed while respecting confidentiality and mitigating potential liability, The Hartford expects:
- Managers and Co-workers to use their discretion to provide reference information directly to current or former employees, provide on-line references and respond to external inquiries about an employee only at the individual’s request. Managers and Co-workers are not obligated to provide referrals or recommendations.
- Any reference comments to be limited to an employee’s performance and refer all inquiries about official employment dates, salary information and reasons for termination to Equifax. Equifax will verify only dates of employment, job title and income as authorized by the current or former employee. Refer all other employment verification inquiries regarding a current or former employee to Equifax at theworknumber.com or 800-367-5690.
- Managers to provide relevant job-related feedback to internal hiring managers or Human Resources representatives as part of The Hartford’s internal hiring process.
Scope
This policy applies to all active employees of The Hartford and its participating subsidiaries who are based at U.S. locations of The Hartford. For employees based outside the U.S., the intent and provisions of this policy apply unless local law requires otherwise.
