Violence-Free Workplace Policy

Overview/Policy Statement

The Hartford strives to provide a work environment, where employees feel comfortable enough to share and apply their passions. Part of ensuring that is making sure employees also feel safe. That's why we take steps to minimize the possibility of violence and threats of violence via our policy that prohibits any of the following in the workplace;
 
  • Physical assaults.
  • Threats of physical assaults or other verbal statements that have the effect of threatening the safety of other persons or property; whether made in person or by other means, including telephone, fax, email, or written correspondence.
  • Harassment.
  • Intimidation.
  • Possession of any firearm, firearm facsimile or other dangerous weapon or substances, weapons accessories (e.g., bullets, holders), explosives or other combustible devices, on company premises, at off-premises company functions, or in any vehicle used for company business or (unless local applicable law requires otherwise) in any vehicle parked on company property. For purposes of this policy, toy weapons or facsimiles that replicate prohibited items fall within the scope of this policy.
Managers and employees are responsible for adherence to company policy. Failure to do so may result in disciplinary action up to and including termination.
 

Scope

This policy applies to all individuals associated with The Hartford in U.S. locations, including, but not limited to: supervisors, managers, coworkers, customers, producers, clients, vendors and visitors. Non-U.S. units shall also apply the intent and provisions of this policy unless local applicable law requires otherwise.
 

Applying The Policy

  • Violations of this policy may result in disciplinary action up to and including termination of employment. With respect to non-employees, management will take appropriate steps as deemed necessary to minimize any threat, with guidance from Human Resources.
  • All visitors are to sign in. All visitors are to be escorted by an employee at all times. The Hartford's Workplace Violence Reporting Procedure is as follows:
     
Employee, Manager or HR Generalist observes or is made aware of the following: Employee, Manager or HR Generalist should:
An actual act of violence or an imminent threat of harm to self or others
Any other incident or threatening conduct, which in the judgment of the employee, manager or HRG requires immediate law
enforcement intervention
Call 911
When able to do so safely, call the Corporate Emergency contact number: 877-55B.SAFE (877-552-7233) and select Option #1 to reach The Hartford's Safety Command Center (Security Operations).
Non-imminent threats of harm to self or others
Matters involving any of the following:
 
  • Restraining Orders prohibiting contact at work
  • Reports of weapons in the workplace (absent a threat of imminent harm)
  • Bomb threats
  • Discovery of suspicious powder or substance
Call the Corporate Emergency contact number: 877-55B.SAFE (877-552-7233) and select Option #1 to reach The Hartford's Safety Command Center (Security Operations).
Inappropriate, potentially aggressive behaviors, including but not limited to:
 
  • using harsh words or insults
  • using excessive profanity
  • arguing loudly
  • extreme displays of anger (e.g., slamming doors, punching walls, etc.)
  • other types of erratic behaviors or outbursts

Enter Employee ID number and Date of Birth and choose the option “HR and Payroll Questions” followed by “Other Questions” to be connected with an agent (calls will be escalated to an Employee Relations Consultant, as appropriate).
