Unpaid Personal Leave of Absence Policy

Overview/Policy Statement

At The Hartford, we understand that sometimes you need a little extra time to recharge and support employees in their pursuit of work life balance, provided there is no negative impact on the business.  Therefore, we may allow employees to take time off without pay when time off is needed for a reason that does not fall under any other Hartford policy on attendance (e.g., Family or Medical Leave and Paid Time Off).

Eligibility/Scope

This policy applies to all active employees of The Hartford and its participating subsidiaries who are based at U.S. locations. Note: This policy does not apply to temporary employees of The Hartford.

Applying the Policy

  • Employees are required to initiate the unpaid Personal Leave directly by contacting HartLeave.
  • Employees are not paid for holidays that occur during an unpaid Personal Leave. You will receive credit for holiday time while on leave and will be able to take that time when you return to work.
  • Note approval guidelines for leave duration:
    • Department head approval for unpaid leaves that are 2 weeks or less in duration.
    • Department head and HR Business Partner approval for unpaid leaves greater than 2 weeks in duration.
