The Hartford’s Human Rights Policy

Rationale

The Hartford is a signatory to the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) and supports the ten human rights principles which originate from the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Leading ethically means, among other things, addressing racial and economic inequality in addition to upholding our existing commitments to operate with integrity and ensure business resiliency. As such, it is our policy to align our practices with the UNGC’s ten principles on human rights, labor, environment, and anti-corruption, as further set forth herein.

Applying the Policy

Our support of the UNGC and its ten human rights principles is demonstrated as follows:

  • We will not be complicit in human rights abuses and will avoid knowingly contributing to unfavorable human rights outcomes through our actions and associations.
  • We strive to uphold the highest standard of ethical leadership and behavior across all levels of The Hartford, as reflected in our Code of Ethics and Business Conduct.
  • We empower our stakeholders, including our customers, employees and agents, to report any ethical concerns anonymously.
  • We do not participate in corrupt business practices, which are prohibited by our Code of Ethics and Business Conduct and monitored by our compliance programs.
  • We do not permit or tolerate discrimination or harassment or any form of retaliation or intimidation in our workplace and offer several ways for our employees to report these concerns.
  • We do not participate in human trafficking, forced labor, child labor or slavery.
  • We are committed to building a diverse workforce and creating an equitable and inclusive culture.
  • We strive to provide our employees with fair wages and benefits and to protect and promote their health and safety.
  • We direct our philanthropic investments to programs which help people prepare and adapt to economic, health and environmental challenges.
  • We are committed to understanding, managing and mitigating climate change risk and we have a steadfast focus on reducing our carbon footprint incrementally each year, as outlined in our Sustainability Highlight Report and Statement on Climate Change.
Compliance with this policy shall be periodically reviewed through various company practices and policies, including but not limited to compliance risk assessments conducted annually by the Company’s Chief Ethics & Compliance Officer or their delegate, and periodic reporting to the Company’s board of directors. Any suspected violation of this policy shall be reported to: Chief Ethics & Compliance Officer
