Our Small Business Coverage Specialist Program is an advanced training program that has been designed to help experienced commercial lines professionals improve their mastery within the small business marketplace. Through exploration of The Hartford’s Business Owner’s Policy (BOP), commercial automobile coverage, workers’ compensation and more, students receive comprehensive and in-depth education to help them provide the best coverage solutions for their small business clients. Supported by real-life case studies and interactive activities, this curriculum takes hands-on approach to assessing insurance needs and providing effective coverage solutions, so students leave this program with skills and knowledge applicable to their everyday role. Upon completion of the program students will earn the nationally-recognized Small Business Coverage Specialist (SBCS) professional designation. Participants must have a minimum of two years of commercial lines experience to attend this program. This program is offered both virtually and in-classroom.

Participants must have a minimum of two years of commercial lines experience to attend this program.
Advanced coverage topics include:
  • Workers’ Compensation – experience rating, loss analysis, pricing options and pricing negotiation
  • BOP Property – exposure analysis, including uncovering gaps created by property exclusions and finding coverage solutions
  • Automobile – exposure analysis and risk management
  • BOP General Liability – contractual issues and professional liability
  • Data Breach – exposures, solutions and risk management tips and resources
  • EPLI – exposure analysis and identifying the key elements to be evaluated in the policy coverage form, including claims made, defense costs, varying definitions of covered “wrongful acts,” varying definitions of “loss” and “claim”
Participants must have a minimum of two years of commercial lines experience to attend this program. Students completing the SBCS program will have demonstrated extensive knowledge in a critical functional area of property and casualty insurance practice – insurance policy coverage – and will have applied that knowledge in real-life case study exercises and activities.
This comprehensive program is divided into two important, interrelated phases:
Phase I (in Agency): Phase I provides students with a solid foundation in insurance concepts, forms and coverages through a structured 4-week in-agency self-study phase consisting of reading and activity assignments. Activity assignments are designed to onboard commercial lines CSRs or Account Managers, help them understand their local marketplace, agency procedures and gain foundational service skills.
*Activity assignments will be received via email upon program registration. Reading assignments will be received via mail approximately 4 weeks prior to course.

Phase II (Instructor-Led Classroom or Virtual/Online): This curriculum is designed around specific case studies and intended to enhance Phase I learning with application of that knowledge to real life examples. At the end of the program, students will also have the ability to test to earn the Small Business Coverage Specialist (SBCS) Designation.
Classroom Hours (Tuesday and Wednesday): 8:00am - 4:00pm
Virtual Small Business Program (Monday through Thursday):

Daily Morning Session: 11:00 am - 1:00 pm EST; 10:00 - 12:00 pm CST; 9:00 - 11:00 am MST; 8:00 - 10:00 am PST
Daily Afternoon Session: 2:30 - 4:30 pm EST; 1:30 - 3:30 pm CST; 12:30 - 2:30 pm MST; 11:30 am - 1:30 pm PST

‚Äč*Students must attend all sessions. Participation in the virtual phase is a full day commitment Monday through Thursday and require students to give 100% of their daily focus and time for the duration of the program. The students are given mandatory assignments to work on and complete before, in between and after daily virtual sessions.

Students wishing to obtain CE Credits must be licensed prior to attending the program. Please note: CE credit hours are subject to change per insurance department regulation and reviews.
  • Virtual Classroom Programs: Because these programs do not include traditional classroom training, these programs are currently not filed for CE credits in any state.

Tuition: $895 and includes all training materials. Travel, lodging and meals are not included.
Your pre-work course material will be mailed to you 30 days prior to the start of Phase II. 
Please note: registrations received less than 2 weeks from the start of class, or those looking to expedite the shipping of materials, will be charged a $25 rush shipping fee. Tuition must be paid in full prior to receiving pre-work material.
Tuition can be paid using Master Card, Visa, American Express, check or VIP spending account (if available).
  • Cancellations received more than 30 days prior to start of the program will receive a full refund.
  • No refunds will be issued for cancellations received less than 30 days prior to the start of the program. Students will be given one opportunity to transfer to another session, preferably within the same calendar year.
  • Refunds are not available for transferred programs.
For Classroom Programs:

The participant is responsible for arranging their own travel and lodging, and covering all costs incurred (including travel, lodging, and meals) while participating in the program. There are a number of hotels available, although Hartford School of Insurance has negotiated special room rates with one hotel in each training location.

Travel arrangements should not be made until registration confirmation has been received. Return flights should not be made before 5:00 pm on the last of class.

Created with the learning needs of new insurance producers, agents, managers, CSRs and corporate staff in mind, Hartford School of Insurance’s Small Business Coverage Specialist Program combined with the SBCS designation curriculum are complete professional learning programs available for industry professionals seeking to master the subject of commercial lines coverage.
Students earning the SBCS designation have demonstrated extensive knowledge in a critical functional area of property and casualty insurance practice insurance policy coverage and will have applied that knowledge in real-life case study exercises.
How do students earn this designation through Hartford School of Insurance?

The SBCS designation is a two-phased program. Students who attend the Small Business Coverage Specialist Program where the National Underwriter material was utilized within self-study (phase I) are eligible for the SBCS designation. The designation is awarded to students who subsequently complete the class (phase II) components of the Program with a grade of 70% or better on each exam. Students who do not meet the requirements may pursue the designation directly through The National Underwriter Company.
