Program

What Is TrueLane?

TrueLane is a voluntary program that gives drivers the opportunity to earn discounts for safe driving. The TrueLane app measures your driving and gives real-time feedback to help you drive safer. You’ll get up to 12% off select coverages just for participating. And you may earn up to 25% off your renewal policy for safe driving.

Note: The TrueLane discount can only be applied to one policy and the initial discount up to 12% is applied as of the effective date of your policy.

What happens if I stop using TrueLane?

This is a continuous program, so you’ll need to drive with the app enabled on your phone to continue participation. There’s no penalty for leaving TrueLane and you can opt out of the program at any time. Just remember that you’ll lose your insurance discount if you opt out.

Data

Does my smartphone need a data plan to run TrueLane?

Yes, you need a data plan with at least 40Mbs per month to upload your driving data and get driving feedback.

Does the app need to be on to collect data?

Yes. The app must be on, and you must be signed in. The app will be running in the background, so there’s nothing else you need to do. As long as you stay signed into the app, you don’t need to keep opening it when you drive – it will stay running in the background.

Does the app use my phone battery?

TrueLane uses about as much battery power as other driving navigation apps. Battery use varies based on phone model and year, and the app uses the most battery when using the GPS. If your phone has less than 10% battery charge, or you have your phone in battery-saving mode the app won’t record your driving. It’s always a good idea to fully charge your phone before a long trip and use a car phone charger while you’re driving.

Scoring

How does TrueLane scoring work?

The TrueLane app collects data using sensors in your smartphone the same as most navigation apps. Then, it analyzes and scores the data based on the following criteria:

  • Phone distractions: The phone is on, unlocked, and is being physically moved while the vehicle is in motion. Driving requires your full attention. Taking your eyes off the road for 5 seconds at 55 mph is like driving with your eyes closed for the length of a football field.
  • Speeding: When you speed, you have less time to react to unexpected situations on the road. Speeding is calculated by comparing your speed to the posted speed limit, plus a buffer depending on the road.
  • Acceleration and braking: GPS data is used to calculate sudden changes in speed. Accelerating and braking smoothly allows more time to react to your surroundings and reduces wear on your vehicle.
  • Cornering: Sensor data is used to measure the speed and distance of changes in the vehicle’s direction to understand if corners were taken safely. Taking a corner too fast may cause loss of control of the vehicle and could shorten the life of your tires.
  • Road type: Percentage of time spent driving on primary, secondary, and rural roads is also factored in with the above criteria.
Your score can change over time based on your driving habits. Don’t worry about one-time incidents impacting your score, safe driving consistency is more important. Log in to the TrueLane app to get your current score, review/edit recent trips, and receive personalized tips to improve your score. You can also find information about your discount in the app.

How does TrueLane know whether I’m a driver or passenger?

Over time, TrueLane learns your personal driving habits, and uses this data and the sensors in your phone to automatically tell if you were driving or riding. You can also check the app – if it says you were the driver, but you weren’t driving, you have 14 days to change the trip driver assignment.

What if I drive another car?

No problem! TrueLane is connected to your phone not your car. It measures your personal driving habits, so you’ll get credit, even if you drive another car.

What if I’m not traveling by car?

If you’re not in a car, the app will know using your phone sensors and GPS information. It won’t count as a trip.

If the app classifies your trip incorrectly, you can edit the classification within 14 days.

How does TrueLane detect phone use while driving?

TrueLane uses car movement, phone movement and screen activation during a trip to measure phone use while driving. If TrueLane senses that your phone is being moved around and your screen is unlocked and on while you are in motion, the app will record it as phone use while driving. Phone use while driving lowers your overall safe-driving score.
