Program

What is TrueLane?

TrueLane is a voluntary program that lets you personalize your insurance based on your driving behaviors. The TrueLane app measures your driving and gives real-time feedback to help you drive safer. You’ll get up to 15%^ off select coverages (up to 10% in Florida and 12% in Vermont) if you sign up within 60 days of your new policy’s start date. You can earn up to 40%, (30% in Vermont) off your renewal policy for safe driving. Riskier habits may result in a higher premium.

Note: The TrueLane sign-up discount is only available to customers signing up for the program within 60 days of when they purchase a new auto policy with The Hartford. The discount can only be applied to one policy. You’ll get up to 15%^ as of the effective date of your new policy.

What happens if I stop using TrueLane?

TrueLane is a continuous program. Once you start the app and turn on the permissions, it’ll continue running in the background to track your driving habits. If you decide the app isn’t for you, you will be removed from the program. However, if we don’t get your driving data for 45 days in a row, you’ll be unenrolled and lose your sign-up discount.

What happens if I decide to leave the TrueLane program?

That depends on when you signed up, and when you choose to leave the program. When you sign up for TrueLane within 60 days of your policy effective date, you get a participation discount. That discount gets removed immediately if you opt out of the program. In some states, if you opt out more than 45 days after signing up and you don’t yet have an eligible driving score, you may receive a surcharge on your future policy renewals. If you do have an eligible driving score, it may affect your renewal rate.

If I leave TrueLane with an eligible driving score, how will that affect my rate when my policy renews?

Depending on your driving score, you’ll continue to pay more or less on your premium for a while after leaving the program. That will gradually taper off through future policy renewals. You always have the option to re-enroll in TrueLane – you’ll start where you left off and have the chance to earn discounts for better driving behavior.

Eligibility and Enrollment

Who can sign up for TrueLane?

To sign up for TrueLane, you must:

  • Be a licensed driver listed on an auto policy with The Hartford.
  • Install, use, and update the app on your compatible smartphone. To work with the program, your phone will need sufficient cellular coverage, sensors that measure movement, and a data plan that can collect and transfer the data that TrueLane collects. You’ll also need to make sure you turn on the app permissions to send TrueLane data. The app works with most current smartphones.
  • Agree to receive text messages on your phone about the TrueLane Program. https://www.thehartford.com/truelane2-texting-terms-conditions
  • Make sure you and all enrolled drivers can receive messages about the program. Every TrueLane driver on your policy should have an active mobile phone number and an email address they check regularly.

Do all drivers on my policy have to sign up?

No, however, more enrolled drivers means a better chance to personalize your premium.

App Download

How do I get started with TrueLane?

Once you’re signed up, we’ll text each participant a link to download the TrueLane app. If you can’t find the message, you may need to work with your cell service carrier to make sure they’re not blocking texts from our number (1-323-772-5560).

How do I get help with downloading the TrueLane App?

Which smartphones work with the TrueLane app?

Most Smartphones that are less than 5 years old work with TrueLane if they have:

  • A data plan
  • Sensor technology
  • TrueLane won't work with some Androids, including:
    • Samsung Galaxy A03
    • Motorola G Pure
    • Samsung Galaxy A12
    • Motorola G Play
    • Samsung Galaxy A13
Note: If your smartphone is not compatible you will be automatically unenrolled and the TrueLane New Business Enrollment discount will be removed.

Data

Does my smartphone need a data plan to run TrueLane?

Yes, you need a data plan with at least 40Mbs per month to upload your driving data and get driving feedback.

Does the app need to be on to collect data?

Yes. The app must be on and you must be signed in. Once you activate the app, it will continue to run in the background.

That way:

  • You don't need to turn it on before every trip
  • You don't need to manage it while driving

Does the app use my phone battery?

TrueLane uses about as much battery power as any other driving or navigation app. The app uses the most power when using the GPS. The app won’t record your driving if you get below 10% charge, or if you have battery-saving mode turned on. Older phones tend to lose battery faster. But even if your phone is new, it’s always a good idea to have a full charge before a long trip and use a charger while driving.

Scoring

How does TrueLane scoring work?

The TrueLane app collects data using sensors in your smartphone, just like other navigation apps. Then, it scores your driving based on five key behaviors:

  • Phone distractions: The phone is on, unlocked, and is being physically moved or touched while the vehicle is in motion. Driving requires your full attention. Taking your eyes off the road for 5 seconds at 55 mph is like driving with your eyes closed for the length of a football field.
  • Speeding: When you speed, you have less time to react to unexpected situations on the road. TrueLane compares your driving speed to the posted speed limit, plus a buffer depending on the road.
  • Braking: TrueLane uses GPS data to calculate sudden changes in speed. Speeding up and braking smoothly give you more time to react to your surroundings. Plus, it reduces wear on your vehicle.
  • Road type: TrueLane pays attention to the kind of roads you drive on. The app is smart enough to know that different types of roads may require different driving behaviors, and it factors that into your score.
TrueLane scores your driving over time based on the average of your driving habits. Don’t worry about a one-time incident ruining your score – safe driving consistency is more important. Log in to the TrueLane app to get your current score, review or edit your recent trips, and get personalized tips to help improve your score. The app will also tell you how your driving is changing your premium cost.

How does TrueLane know whether I’m a driver or passenger?

Over time, TrueLane learns the driving habits of everyone on your policy who uses the app. It uses that data and the sensors in your phone to tell if you were driving or riding. Early on, it’s a good idea to check the app after every trip in the car. If it thinks you were driving but you were really a passenger, you have 14 days to change the driver on that trip.

What if I drive another car?

No problem! TrueLane is connected to your phone, not your car. It measures your personal driving habits, so you’ll get credit even if you drive another car.

What if I’m not traveling by car?

If you’re not in a car, the app will know using your phone sensors and GPS information. It won’t count as a trip.

How does TrueLane detect phone use while driving?

Your smartphone’s sensors tell TrueLane how your phone is moving. That’s how it measures your driving, but it can also tell if your screen is on during a trip, or if the phone is moving inside the vehicle. When you’re driving, avoid:

  • Unlocking your phone
  • Touching your screen
  • Moving your phone
