Required Car Insurance Coverages in Iowa

Iowa state law requires liability car insurance at the following minimum limits:2
  • $20,000 for bodily injury, per person per accident.
  • $40,000 for bodily injury, total per accident.
  • $15,000 for property damage per accident.

Proof of Car Insurance in Iowa

Iowa state law requires you to furnish a copy of your car insurance ID card if requested by a police officer or other party if involved in an accident. That’s why it’s a good idea to keep a copy of your car insurance ID card in the vehicle with your registration. Iowa Uninsured Driver Facts

According to a 2012 Insurance Research Council report, 9.7 percent of Iowa drivers are uninsured. This is significantly below the national average of 12.6%.3
The state of Iowa does not require drivers to carry uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage, but The Hartford offers this coverage which will protect you from financial loss if you are involved in an accident with an uninsured motorist.

Staying Safe on Iowa Roads

As you travel through Iowa, there are a number of safe driving laws meant to protect you on the Iowa’s highways and byways. Here are just a few:4

Iowa Seat Belt Laws:

It is a mandatory law to wear a seat belt while driving the roads of Iowa.

Iowa Distracted Driving Laws:

Texting while driving is banned for all drivers in the State of Iowa.

Iowa Teen Driver Laws:

Getting a driver’s license is a rite of passage for all teenagers, and Iowa wants to be sure they stay safe in the process! Iowa has implemented graduated licensing laws to ensure that teenagers gain the experience and maturity that’s required to be safe behind the wheel. Graduated licensing laws limit nighttime driving, restrict teen passengers and ensure an adequate amount of supervised driving practice.

If you are age 50 or older, once you’re insured through this Program for at least 60 days, you cannot be refused renewal as long as applicable premiums are paid when due. Also, you and other customary drivers of your vehicles must retain valid licenses, remain physically and mentally capable of operating an automobile (not applicable in MA), have no convictions for driving while intoxicated and must not have obtained your policy through material misrepresentation. Benefit currently not available in HI, MI, NH, NC and TX.

First Accident Forgiveness and the Disappearing Deductible, are only available with the Advantage Plus package. A policy without these benefits is also available. (Call for details.) To qualify for the Accident Forgiveness benefit in most states, all drivers on the policy must have a clean driving record (no accidents or violations) for five consecutive years. First Accident Forgiveness and Disappearing Deductible are not available to CA policyholders. To qualify for the Disappearing Collision Deductible benefit in most states, all drivers on the policy must have a clean driving record for three consecutive years. NY drivers are not eligible for the complete disappearance of the deductible, although it will be reduced to a minimum of $100. The Advantage Plus package option, the Disappearing Deductible benefit and the Accident Forgiveness benefit are not available in all states.
