Strengthening Workplace Safety Through Machine Guarding

Learn how an oilfield equipment manufacturer partnered with The Hartford's Risk Engineering team to identify machine safeguarding opportunities, reduce employee exposure to hazards and achieve a projected $5.5 million return on investment.

The Risk

An oilfield equipment manufacturer had multiple pieces of equipment that could have created serious employee injury.

Implemented Solutions

The customer partnered with our Risk Engineering Consultants to conduct detailed machine safeguarding evaluations, including a specialist’s analysis via video, measurements and workflow reviews. Our consultants helped build a business case and then co-presented the findings to the leadership team to enhance machine guarding, strengthen safety programs and improve work processes.

Success

The customer installed horizontal guards on several machines, significantly reducing employee exposure to hazards. The improvements delivered a projected ROI of $5.5 million while creating a safer work environment for employees.

Learn how a solar installer partnered with The Hartford's Risk Engineering team to expand telematics across its fleet, improve driver safety and achieve dramatic reductions in auto claims and related costs.

The Risk  Implemented Solutions  Success
A solar installer’s limited telematics use across a small portion of its fleet made risky driving behaviors and vehicle incidents difficult to detect and manage. This contributed to higher auto claim frequency and costs.  The customer followed our Risk Engineering Consultant’s recommendation to leverage a subsidy program to help offset implementation costs. This was used to expand telematics technology across its entire fleet, adding forward- and inward-facing cameras to all vehicles.   Within six months of full deployment, the customer achieved a 95% reduction in incurred auto claim value and a 94% reduction in claim frequency compared to the previous six-month period. The investment delivered exceptional ROI while significantly improving fleet safety performance.
Discover how targeted exposure testing and engineering controls helped a metal fabrication company lower manganese exposure, protect employees and avoid costly occupational disease claims.

The Risk  Implemented Solutions  Success
A metal fabrication company’s industrial hygiene survey revealed that welders were being overexposed to manganese, a serious health hazard that can cause permanent neurological damage. Our Risk Engineering Consultant conducted exposure testing and implemented engineering controls by switching to low-manganese welding wire. This change reduced the customer’s manganese exposure levels to well below industry standards. The improvement helped protect employees from a serious occupational health risk while avoiding an estimated $43,000 occupational disease claim. The initiative delivered a substantial ROI, estimated to be over $168,000 in value.
Learn how a city partnered with The Hartford's Risk Engineering team to identify vulnerabilities in critical wastewater infrastructure, reduce the risk of equipment failure and achieve an estimated $350,000 in loss cost avoidance.

The Risk  Implemented Solutions  Success
During prior storm events, a city’s wastewater treatment plant experienced repeated failure of vital surge protection devices that support critical sewage pumps. These failures created the potential for up to $50,000 in damage per device, along with operational disruptions and potential sewer backups.  Acting on a recommendation from our Risk Engineering Consultant, the city spent $4,000 to upgrade the dedicated surge protection devices after identifying vulnerabilities in the built-in protection during storm events.   The improvements eliminated a major source of equipment failure and helped prevent future downtime and service interruptions. The project delivered an estimated $350,000 in loss cost avoidance
Learn how a renewable energy project partnered with The Hartford's Risk Engineering team to address erosion and site stability concerns, helping protect critical infrastructure and achieve an estimated $1.5 million in loss cost avoidance.

The Risk  Implemented Solutions  Success
Delays during a customer’s construction project of a ground-mounted solar array and Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) exposed the site to ongoing erosion and retaining wall instability.   After a recommendation from our Risk Engineering Consultant, the project team invested in a comprehensive redesign of a 438-foot retaining wall and hired an engineer to ensure long-term stability. Additionally, eroded soil was removed from the solar array and surrounding site.  The new retaining wall was completed, reducing the risk of erosion-related damage and improving the site's long-term resilience. The investment of $290,704 resulted in an estimated $1.5 million in loss cost avoidance, delivering a positive ROI
