Mitigating Total Loss Exposure Through Collaborative Fire Protection Improvements

Learn how one cleanroom manufacturer addressed critical fire protection deficiencies through sprinkler system upgrades and other improvements that enhanced property protection and operational stability.

The Risk

A cleanroom product manufacturing facility faced significant property loss exposure due to deficiencies in its fire protection systems. Without improvements, the facility risked a potential total building loss and severe business interruption.

Implemented Solutions

Risk Engineering consulting teams across field, virtual and technical disciplines collaborated closely with the customer and broker to address nine recommendations. Through ongoing consultation, education and technical plan reviews, the team helped the client understand the risks and move forward with a sprinkler system redesign and installation.

Success

Convinced by the team's consultative approach, the customer invested $175,000 to complete all nine recommendations. The new sprinkler system was installed, inspected and tested, and all recommendations were successfully completed, significantly strengthening the facility's property protection.

More Success Stories

After an ergonomic assessment revealed opportunities to reduce employee strain, a manufacturer implemented new equipment and process changes to improve material handling. The result was a safer, more efficient operation.

The Risk  Implemented Solutions  Success
At a manufacturing facility for metal hip and knee replacement components, employees faced ergonomic risks from repetitive lifting, bending and handling 50–80-pound bins during forging operations.  After an ergonomic assessment, our Risk Engineering Consultant recommended process changes and the purchase of pallet carousels and pump carts to reduce manual material handling and improve workflow efficiency.   The new process significantly reduced ergonomic risk factors, eliminated much of the manual lifting and stacking, and improved operational efficiency. The changes delivered an estimated 201% ROI, generating nearly $80,000 in value.
When warehouse storage conditions created a substantial fire loss exposure, a manufacturer partnered with Risk Engineering specialists to develop a long-term protection strategy. The resulting upgrades helped fully protect the facility and reduce the risk of a multimillion-dollar property loss.

The Risk  Implemented Solutions  Success
A manufacturer of cosmetic ingredients and pharmaceuticals stored large quantities of empty plastic pails and drums, creating a fire exposure that exceeded the protection capabilities of its existing sprinkler system.  Our Risk Engineering Consultant worked with the customer, sprinkler contractor and technical specialists to develop a long-term protection strategy to upgrade the warehouse sprinkler system and install a larger fire pump.  The insured invested $120,600 in sprinkler improvements, resulting in a fully protected facility and helping prevent a potential $6.4 million total loss.
Discover how one manufacturer used engineering controls and safety best practices to eliminate caught-in and entanglement hazards while generating significant financial value through loss prevention.

The Risk  Implemented Solutions  Success
During a survey at an air filter manufacturing facility, our Risk Engineering Consultant found that employees were exposed to injury caused by access to machinery with exposed rotating equipment. Previous injuries highlighted the potential for serious caught-in and entanglement incidents. The consultant introduced The Hartford's Over, Under, Through, and Around (OUTA) principle and recommended stronger engineering controls. The client then partnered with the consultant to conduct a machine guarding assessment and implement guarding and interlocks designed by its in-house engineering team.  The new machine guarding system eliminated the exposure to caught-in and entanglement hazards while enhancing the facility's lockout/tagout procedures. The client significantly reduced employee injury risk and achieved an estimated ROI of $137,228.
