Why Do You Need Podcast Insurance?
Your podcast isn’t just a passion – it’s a business. But even the most well-established podcasters can face unexpected challenges, like copyright disputes, equipment damage or legal claims. Without the right coverage, a single issue could disrupt your work and impact your income.
Podcast insurance can help protect you in common situations, like if:
- Your recording equipment gets lost or stolen
- A covered event, like a fire or storm, shuts down your studio
- A guest gets injured while recording an episode with you

What Type of Insurance Do I Need for My Podcast?
Many podcasters have a Business Owner’s Policy (BOP) as the foundation of their insurance plan for the peace of mind it helps provide. It includes three types of coverage to help protect you in the event of personal injury, property damage or lost income.
A BOP includes:
General liability insurance to help protect your podcast from claims that it caused bodily injury or property damage to others, like if you break someone’s belongings while recording an episode at their house.
Commercial property insurance to help protect your studio space, as well as the tools, equipment and supplies you use to operate your podcast. These can include:
- Microphones and headphones
- Laptops and tablets
- Audio mixers, interfaces and studio monitors
- Microphone stands and hardware
- Hard drives and storage systems
Business income insurance to help replace lost income if you can’t record your podcast because of a covered event like fire, theft or wind. For example, water damage from a leaky HVAC system might temporarily prevent you from creating new episodes.
At The Hartford, we know podcasters have specific needs. So, we’ve made it easy for you to add other types of insurance to your BOP for well-rounded protection. These can include:
How Much Does Podcasting Insurance Cost?
Although The Hartford doesn’t offer podcast insurance, here are the average costs our small business customers pay for common types of coverage:**
- BOP: $1,687 a year, or $141 a month
- Stand-alone general liability insurance: $810 a year, or about $68 a month
- Workers’ compensation insurance: $1,032 a year, or about $86 a month
It’s important to remember that the cost of your podcast insurance may differ from the average. That’s because every business owner faces unique risks, and insurers may use several factors to determine rates. The best way to find out how much you’ll pay for insurance is to get a quote from Tivly.
General Liability Insurance
“I was interviewing an expert at my studio when he tripped over our A/V cords and sprained his ankle. He had to go to the hospital for treatment.”
General liability helps cover claims that your podcast hurt somebody else. It can help cover your legal costs if you get sued and their medical bills if a person gets injured.
Business Income Insurance
“A pipe burst in the studio, damaging the equipment so badly that we had to shut down production for almost a month.”
Business income insurance can help you continue paying ongoing expenses like rent, payroll and utilities if you’re unable to operate temporarily because of property damage from fire, theft, wind or leaky pipes.
Workers’ Compensation Insurance
“My editor started having wrist pain and claimed it was from the desk setup I provided. Eventually, it got so bad he needed surgery and had to take off time to recover.”
Workers’ compensation insurance gives your team benefits to help them recover from work-related injuries and illnesses. It can help pay their medical bills and replace lost wages if they can’t work.
Employment Practices Liability Insurance (EPLI)
“My producer was sued by a vendor after she ended a contract due to issues with the technology. The vendor claimed the producer harassed them and discriminated against them.”
Employment practices liability insurance (EPLI) helps protect your business from employment-related claims, like wrongful termination, discrimination and harassment. This coverage is included in a BOP from The Hartford and includes coverage for third-party claims.
Commercial Property Insurance
“A fire in our building damaged our studios. We had to get new microphones, headphones and mixing tools.”
Commercial property insurance helps protect your business' equipment, furniture and tools from loss or damage caused by events like storms, fires, vandalism or leaky plumbing.
Commercial Auto Insurance
“I was on my way to pick up equipment and supplies for the studio when I rear-ended another car. I wasn’t seriously hurt, but my car was in bad shape, and I had no way to get to recordings or meetings.”
Commercial auto insurance can help cover property damage and bodily injury claims if an employee gets into an accident while driving a business-owned vehicle for work.
